A native of Charleston, Henry was nurtured on a solid diet of humidity so thick you could drown in it, and swamps so dense that locals claimed the muck would eat you alive if you were careless. As a boy, his upbringing lacked the emphasis on musical literacy that his peers at Enemy received. But he was raised for many years by a fiercely driven single mother, who did all in her power to instill a sense of kindness and wonder in his bulging blue eyes.

With the gift of sympathy and an unwavering feeling that all of humanity is a treasure to be cherished, Henry struck forth to figure this whole life thing out. Upon entering his tween years, he was faced with an ultimatum from his mother. Pick a sport, or join the band. Always an uncoordinated, scrawny, and pale little creature, more interested in books and puzzles than football or baseball, he chose the obvious answer and soon began to play the saxophone.

While the instrument did not stick with him into the present, left behind in his high school days, a seed of sonic obsession had been planted and soon blossomed into a musical taste he would enthusiastically claim as both diverse and poignant. An adoration for those he would identify as the greats, Nina Simone, Elliott Smith, David Berman, and beyond, came with this newfound passion, and he would make it everyone’s problem to hear about it.

As a young man, he has found an ally in words, both spoken and written. This desire to connect with others led him to found The Community Stoop, a Charleston-based mutual aid organization focused on addressing food insecurity. So, with a pen in his pocket and a speaking voice that is frequently far too loud, Henry hopes to use his spirited nature to rally his fellow community members behind the shared goals of love and creativity, especially in a time when he believes the world is trying to tear many of us apart.
